Let’s make things very simple and black and white. Look at cardio heart rate training zone as having two forms: aerobic and anaerobic.
Aerobic zone. This is the most effective zone for cardiovascular fitness, within the aerobic zone your cardiovascular capacity will increase and the body’s ability to transport blood to the muscle cells and carbon dioxide away from the cells. Your body will become a better all around system in this zone. The body will also burn a greater degree of the calories used here from fat reserves.
Anaerobic zone. The anaerobic zone is intense; anaerobic is the point at which the body cannot remove lactic acid as quickly as it is being produced. Continual training at this zone will certain increase sports performance. Bigger percent of the calories burnt in this zone are from carbohydrates (glycogen) though a greater number of calories are burnt in total. So there is a large difference in what happens depending on how you do cardio.
So how does one work out how to stay in the zone for their fitness. The aerobic zone is between 65-80% of someone’s MHR (maximum heart rate). The anaerobic zone is between 80-100% of someone’s (MHR). The way of working out what heart rate you should be working in is as follows.
MHR=220 220 – (age) x (heart rate zone)
Therefore if you’re reading this and you are a 35 year old male. You’re going to be training aerobically at 70% of your MHR. This is how you would work it out.
MHR=220 220 – (35) 185 x (0.70) (70%) = 129.5
What all of this means is that for this 35 year old male to have a aerobic workout he should make sure his heart rate is being sustained at 129.5. The best way of monitoring your heart rate by the way is to invest in a heart rate monitor there are plenty on the market.
Concluding thoughts if you’re someone who is just starting an exercise program and want to lose weight while getting more healthy and lean keep between 65-80% of your MHR. A lot of the top athletes train in the anaerobic zone because, of the cross over and improvement in their specific sports performance. The most effective way of burning body fat is to keep your cardio routine within the aerobic zone. Whilst also investing time into maximising you nutritional plan for optimum results.
