The use of several defense mechanisms and guards is made in boxing and they are also recognized to play a very important role for the participant boxers in order to ensure their own protection in the process. Different types of defense mechanisms have been identified. Some of these include Slip, Sway or Fade, Bob and Weave, Duck or Break, and Cover-up.

Slipping is a type of defense mechanism that is used by the boxer to save himself from the oncoming punch of the opponent. In this mechanism, the boxer rotates his body slightly and thus the punch does not affect the boxer at all and it passes next to his head. This is achieved by the sharp rotation of the hips and shoulders by the boxer, leading to the chin turning sideways.

Another defense mechanism that is used by the boxer in anticipation of a punch from an opponent is the Sway or the Fade mechanism. In this mechanism, the boxer ensures to move his upper body or his head backwards and thus either the punch can be prevented completely or its impact can be surely lessened.

When the opponent targets a punch at the head of the boxer, he drops down and tries to keep his back straight. This is done in a manner such that the punch is either only glanced by the head or the head misses the punch completely. This defense mechanism is known as the Duck or the Break.

Another common type of defense mechanism that is also used by the boxer is Bob and Weave. Through the defense mechanism of Bobbing, the head is moved laterally so as to avoid the incoming punch. The boxer also bends his legs quickly. At the same time, he also shifts his body simultaneously either slightly right or left in order to ensure that the punch is completely evaded. Once the evasion of the punch has been ensured, the boxer now makes use of the weaving defense mechanism so as to achieve an upright position once again.

The other defense mechanism in which the use of the shoulders of the boxer, his hands and arms is made as the prime defensive tools is termed as the Parry or the Block mechanisms. The arms, hands and shoulders primarily serve to block all the incoming attacks for the boxer. Covering up is a defense mechanism that is available as a last opportunity to save him of an incoming strike especially when he is participating in a fight with an unprotected face as well as unprotected body. In this type of defense, the boxer tends to protect his head by holding his hands very high. When the boxer is involved in protecting his body against the incoming punches, he also ensures the rotation of the hips and ensures that the incoming punches typically roll off the guard. Another typical type of defense mechanism that is similar to grappling is Clinching.
In addition to the defense mechanisms that are used by the boxer, there are also several defensive positions that can also be used in boxing. These are termed as guards and styles. There is a considerable variation that exists between the different boxers as far as these styles and guards are concerned.
